Simple Swing Trading Strategy
The Setup
I look at the daily chart at market close. If price is above the 50-day moving average and the 50 is above the 200-day moving average, I’m only looking for buy setups. If it’s below both, I only look for sells. If the moving averages are crossing or tangled up, I don’t trade.
Entry
For buys, I wait for price to pull back to the 20-day moving average and show a bullish candle close. For sells, I wait for a pullback up to the 20-day moving average and a bearish candle close. That’s it. Nothing fancy.
Stop Loss
I put my stop loss just below the recent swing low for buys, or just above the recent swing high for sells. Usually about 1.5-2 times the average daily range.
Take Profit
I take partial profits at 1.5x risk and 2.5x risk. The rest I trail with a 20-day moving average until it gets hit.
When I Actually Trade
I don’t check charts during the day. I set price alerts and check everything at market close. Takes about 5 minutes. Some weeks I take 3 trades. Some weeks I take zero. That’s fine.
I skip trading when there’s major news or if I’ve had a few losses in a row. No point forcing it.
The Simple Checklist
Before entering any trade, I check:
Is this with or against the trend?
Has price pulled back enough?
Does the daily candle confirm my entry direction?
If yes, take the trade. If no, move on.
This strategy works for me because it’s simple and I can follow it consistently. I don’t overthink entries. I risk 1-2% per trade and let the winners run.
